Gold is not at $4,200 just because a Monday post said so. This gold price prediction starts from the Kitco Metals bid of $4,164.30 at 9:01 a.m. New York on 12 October 2026: a cool September CPI points to $4,372.15 by Friday 16 October, and a hot print points to $4,031.25. If the data do not shock a market that already prices an October hike near 17 percent, the base is $4,151.60. Monday morning did not have one spot. Arslan Ali’s FXEmpire page, updated at 10:08 GMT, still described gold around $4,185.32 on a two-hour chart, while that page’s live line at 13:03 UTC showed $4,165.05. An X post at 12:59 UTC attributed about $4,206 to Reuters. Those are different trades. The cases below use only the Kitco bid.
Calling gold a test of $4,200 uses the top of the morning, not the bid. The same Kitco page shows a day range of $4,153.80 to $4,218.10. The $53.80 gap between that high and the bid is 1.29 percent before the inflation number exists. Yahoo Finance returned HTTP 429 and Stooq returned a browser check, so no ounce history was saved. The band below uses GLD’s volatility, applied to the ounce and labeled as the ETF.

What just happened, and why $4,200 is the wrong start
The spot is the Kitco screen saved for this piece. At 9:01 a.m. New York on Monday 12 October the bid was $4,164.30, the ask $4,166.30, and the change minus $29.30, or 0.70 percent. The 9:00 a.m. ET line says $4,164.30 per troy ounce, down $29.30, from Kitco Metals Inc. in Montreal, in U.S. dollars. That bid is the only input to the cases.
Friday night was another clock. Ernest Hoffman at Kitco News, updated at 9:41 p.m. on 9 October, had spot last at $4,194.64 after a low of $4,066.31 and an early Friday high of $4,207.48. Monday’s bid is $30.34 under that print. Kitco’s own change of minus $29.30 is a different reference, not a rewrite of $4,194.64. Neither number is an equity close, and the exchange is open on Columbus Day.
Ali’s $4,185.32 is a two-hour chart sentence: under a descending trendline, after a failure near $4,200 and a bounce from the $4,103 region. The widget on that same page read $4,165.05 at 13:03 UTC, down 0.61 percent, with support at $4,154.99, a pivot at $4,181.24, and resistance at $4,220.89 from the 9 October session. One URL, $20.27 apart. The FXStreet and RoboForex URLs behind the other morning leads returned HTTP 404, so those sketches are dropped. The verified Monday high is Kitco’s $4,218.10, still $154.05 short of the bull case.
The Macro Memo posted at 12:59 UTC that gold “started the week higher near $4,206/oz as oil and the dollar slipped, per Reuters,” with traders pricing a 17 percent October hike and 86 percent by December on CME FedWatch. Reuters returned HTTP 401, so $4,206 stays the post’s claim. The 17 and 86 match Ali. They do not change the bid.
Who is exposed
Desks are exposed to the bid they show. Kitco was $2.00 wide, about 0.05 percent of $4,164.30. The bull case is $207.85 away and the bear case $133.05 away, so the spread is not the risk. Marking a book at $4,206, or at $4,185.32, while Montreal shows $4,164.30, is the risk. A sale near $4,218.10 is not the same trade as a buy at the bid.
ETF holders are on Friday’s official close. Nasdaq has SPDR Gold Shares at $384.58 on 9 October, volume 7,472,309, 22.45 percent under the 29 January close of $495.90. From $380.14 on 2 October the fund rose 1.17 percent into Friday. The Monday ounce bid did not extend that. A GLD mark is not a Kitco mark.
Ali, citing the World Gold Council, said ETFs added 67 metric tons in September, to 4,256 tonnes. He put third-quarter inflows at $31 billion and September inflows at $10 billion in the key points. The Council file was not opened here. A forecast he attributed to Reuters puts 2026 official-sector buying near 720 metric tons, about 15 percent below 2025, and that Reuters page returned 401. No miner print was saved. In Friday’s Kitco survey, 7 of 14 analysts expected a higher week, against a $4,194.64 print that Monday’s bid has already undercut by $29.30 on Kitco’s change field.
What the pages actually show
Every row is a saved page, the Nasdaq file, or an X post whose text was stored. Nothing is an average.

From the post’s $4,206 to the Kitco bid is $41.70 inside the same hour. Starting at the high spends the bull case before CPI. In the GLD file the peak close is $495.90 on 29 January and the last close is $384.58. Across the last 90 sessions, 2 June through 9 October, the daily log-return standard deviation is 0.01623537 and the mean is -0.00076389.
What named people have said
Ali, technical analysis expert at FXEmpire, wrote on 12 October: “Investor focus now shifts to the upcoming U.S. CPI report due out on Wednesday. Market expectations for an October Fed Funds hike have dropped to approximately 17%, while expectations for at least one rate hike by December has risen to approximately 86%.” He added that further hikes through year end still leave “some contraction in the non-yielding asset class.” His levels are not the table. “I am looking for gold to bounce from the $4,175.03 region, but if it does break below this region, I expect further downside to the $4,141.86 region and possibly $4,103.24 and $4,067.42.” Above $4,226.82 he looked toward $4,271.57 and $4,311.17. The Kitco bid is already under $4,175.03.
Rich Checkan, president and COO of Asset Strategies International, told Kitco News on 9 October: “The overriding belief now is there will be no Fed interest rate hike at the October FOMC Meeting. So, that should take some of the short-term pressure off gold. Treasury yields and a strong U.S. dollar will cap appreciation, but gold should still climb over the next week.” That was said against $4,194.64. Monday’s bid has not delivered the climb. Kevin Grady, president of Phoenix Futures and Options, took the hot side: “The inflation numbers have been kind of muted, but I think it’s going to hit this month. It’s tied into energy prices and that’s just a fact of it.” He also said the book is “very tick sensitive because the people aren’t trading; it’s the algos.” He did not name $4,031.25.
Marc Chandler, managing director at Bannockburn Global Forex, said: “It must reestablish a foothold above $4230 to suggest a base has formed.” He expects a faster CPI print to weigh on the metal. That $4,230 line is not the bear case, and a $4,230 bear is already in an older FinanceFeeds title. Alex Kuptsikevich of FxPro saw no barrier before $4,300 to $4,350, still under this bull case.
Seventeen percent in October, 86 percent by December
Finance Calendar lists September CPI for Wednesday 14 October 2026 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, with consensus not yet published. Hoffman’s survey puts CPI on Wednesday morning and PPI, retail sales, claims, and the Philly Fed and Empire State surveys on Thursday, with Chair Kevin Warsh at an IMF event in Bangkok that evening. CNBC on 2 October, beside a caption naming Kevin Warsh as Federal Reserve chairman, dates the next decision to 28 October. The BLS schedule URL returned HTTP 403, so 8:30 a.m. is Finance Calendar’s clock.
Trading Economics, citing the BLS, still shows August as the latest CPI: 3.4 percent on the year, the same as July, and 0.4 percent on the month. Core rose 0.3 percent on the month, above a 0.2 percent forecast, and the annual core rate slowed to 2.4 percent from 2.5 percent. Gasoline was up 27.4 percent on the year and fuel oil 52 percent. That is the energy channel in Grady’s remark. Posts on X the same morning called the consensus 3.6 percent or 3.7 percent. They disagree, and the calendar’s consensus field was empty, so neither is used.
On 2 October, CNBC had CME FedWatch at 17 percent for a quarter-point October hike, down from close to 36 percent a week earlier, after payrolls rose 29,000 against estimates of more than 80,000. December that day was above 75 percent. Adam Schickling, a senior economist at Vanguard, said: “This report strengthens the case for the Federal Reserve to remain patient.” By 12 October, Ali still had October near 17 percent and December near 86 percent for at least one hike. A hot CPI confirms December. A cool CPI has to chip both.
The Nasdaq file’s last row is Friday 9 October, saved before the 9:30 a.m. Eastern open, so Monday is not drawn. The stock exchange is open on Columbus Day. No bond-holiday close was fetched, so none is claimed. Hoffman tied Friday’s bounce to softer oil and to Michigan sentiment at 46.3. That high is not Monday’s spot.
Bull, base, and bear from $4,164.30
Older FinanceFeeds headlines already used a $4,400 bull with a $3,870 bear, a $4,750 bull with a $3,850 bear, and a $4,650 bull with a $3,950 bear. See the $4,123.20 piece, the real-yields piece at $4,286, and the seven-week-low piece at $4,125. Those pairs are not repeated. Chandler’s $4,230 is not the bear, and Ali’s $4,226.82 is not the bull.
The last 90 GLD daily log returns, 2 June 2026 through 9 October, have standard deviation 0.01623537 and mean -0.00076389. The horizon is four sessions, Tuesday 13 October through Friday 16 October. The square root of 4 is 2. The bull is 1.5 standard deviations, because a cool print has to lean against an 86 percent December path. The bear is 1.0, because a hot print mostly confirms that path. The base is the drift alone. A 1.5 standard-deviation selloff would print $3,966.33, and that is not the bear.
Bull: 1.5 times 0.01623537 times 2 is 0.04870611, and $4,164.30 times e to that power is $4,372.15, up $207.85, or 4.99 percent. Base: four times -0.00076389 is -0.00305556, and $4,164.30 times e to that power is $4,151.60, down $12.70, or 0.30 percent. Bear: 0.01623537 times 2 is 0.03247074, and $4,164.30 times e to the minus of that power is $4,031.25, down $133.05, or 3.20 percent. The bull is outside Monday’s high, the bear is outside Monday’s low, and the base is only $2.20 under the morning low of $4,153.80.
| Case | Price | Versus the $4,164.30 bid | What has to be true |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bull | $4,372.15 | Up $207.85, or 4.99 percent | September CPI is cool enough to cut the roughly 86 percent December hike path, and the ounce travels 1.5 standard deviations by Friday 16 October. Clearing $4,218.10 is not this case. |
| Base | $4,151.60 | Down $12.70, or 0.30 percent | CPI does not shock October odds near 17 percent or December odds near 86 percent. Four sessions of the estimated drift land just under Monday’s $4,153.80 low. |
| Bear | $4,031.25 | Down $133.05, or 3.20 percent | CPI is hot on the energy channel Grady named, and December odds stay high. The ounce falls 1.0 standard deviation over the same four sessions. Not $4,000, and not $4,230. |
What happens next
Wednesday 14 October at 8:30 a.m. ET chooses the row. A hot September CPI, against August’s 3.4 percent annual rate and the gasoline and fuel-oil jumps already in that report, tests $4,031.25 by Friday 16 October. The chain is a hot print holding December near 86 percent, worth about $133 under the bid at 1.0 standard deviation.
A cool print is the path to $4,372.15, and only if it chips December, not just the 17 percent October chance. That is 1.5 standard deviations, not the January GLD high and not the $4,300 to $4,350 band. A cool headline that leaves December alone is the base at $4,151.60. Checkan can be right that October is a skip, and the ounce can still sit there. His climb needs the cool data.
Thursday 15 October brings PPI and the other releases Hoffman listed, then Warsh in Bangkok. Hot CPI plus hot PPI is how the bear case lasts a second day. A cool CPI that Warsh does not talk back up is how the bull case reaches Friday. The FOMC date CNBC gave is 28 October, twelve days after these cases expire. The meeting tests the 17 percent October probability. It does not redraw the band unless the band has already been hit. This is not financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
Where does gold go from $4,164.30 if Wednesday’s CPI runs hot or cool?
A cool September CPI points to $4,372.15 by Friday 16 October, and a hot print points to $4,031.25. The base, if the data do not shock a market that already prices an October hike near 17 percent, is $4,151.60. Those figures are 1.5 standard deviations up, four sessions of drift, and 1.0 standard deviation down, from GLD’s last 90 daily log returns applied to the Kitco bid. They are not bank targets.
Which gold price is this prediction using?
The spot is the Kitco Metals bid of $4,164.30 at 9:01 a.m. New York on 12 October 2026, down $29.30, or 0.70 percent, with the ask at $4,166.30. The 9:00 a.m. ET line states the same ounce price. The FXEmpire widget at $4,165.05, Ali’s $4,185.32 chart line, and an X post’s $4,206 claim are other clocks. They are not averaged into the spot.
How were the bull case and the bear case calculated?
The bull at $4,372.15 is $4,164.30 times e to the power of 1.5 times 0.01623537 times the square root of 4. The bear at $4,031.25 uses 1.0 standard deviation from Tuesday 13 October through Friday 16 October. The deviation is GLD’s, from 2 June through 9 October, because no spot history file was saved. Friday’s GLD close was $384.58, and that is not an ounce price.
Why not start from $4,185 or $4,210?
Those were not one Monday spot. Ali’s page still says about $4,185.32 on the two-hour chart, while the live line was $4,165.05 at 13:03 UTC. The $4,210 lead was not on a primary page this fetch opened. Kitco’s Monday high was $4,218.10, in a range that also printed $4,153.80. Starting at the high would be a different trade from the $4,164.30 bid.
When is the September CPI, and what was the last reading?
Finance Calendar lists the September CPI for Wednesday 14 October 2026 at 8:30 a.m. ET and marks the consensus as not yet published. The BLS schedule URL returned HTTP 403 here. Trading Economics, citing the BLS, still shows August: 3.4 percent on the year, 0.4 percent on the month, and core CPI at 0.3 percent on the month and 2.4 percent on the year.
Does Friday’s GLD close say where the ounce goes?
No. The official Friday close was $384.58, up 1.17 percent from 2 October and 22.45 percent under the 29 January close of $495.90. The fund is the volatility proxy and the chart, not the spot. Ounce cases stay in dollars per ounce off the Kitco bid. Monday’s bar is missing because the cash close was not in the file, not because the stock exchange is shut.
