The Risky Gamble of Letting Cameras Into the Home of Elizabeth Holmes

Billy Evans is starting to wonder if letting a film crew into his private life was a massive mistake. Speaking on the All In podcast, the partner of disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes admitted that Holmes looks insane in the trailer for You Can See Everything, the new documentary directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim. Despite the alarming first impressions and a soundtrack that feels pointedly critical, Evans maintains that the goal was simply to let the public see Holmes as a human being rather than a caricature defined by legal documents.

According to Evans, the decision to participate stemmed from a desire to break through what he calls an ossified narrative. He explained that throughout their relationship, including when they had their two children together, his closest friends and family initially reacted with horror at his choice of partner. However, once those loved ones spent time with Holmes in natural settings like hiking or helping others, their opinions shifted radically. This film was intended to scale that personal experience up for a global audience, allowing viewers to observe her behavior and make up their own minds.

Despite these intentions, early reactions suggest the project may be having the opposite effect. While the documentary has garnered significant critical acclaim and Oscar buzz following its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, A24’s promotional teasers have only intensified public distrust toward Holmes. Viewers were left chilled by her demeanor and her insistence that she did nothing wrong during her tenure at Theranos. For some, instead of seeing a misunderstood woman, they saw further evidence of a delusional persona.

Evans confessed that he hasn’t actually seen the finished movie yet and joked that it might be the dumbest thing he has ever done. Still, he remains relatively unfazed by the potential fallout. Having navigated years of surreal public scrutiny alongside Holmes since they met in 2017, he noted that it takes quite a lot to raise his blood pressure these days. Ultimately, while he acknowledges the risk of how she is portrayed, he stands by the choice as theirs alone to make.
